Fundamental System Skills in z/OS

Course Description

Learn the fundamental skills to navigate and work in a z/OS environment, including the use of Interactive System Productivity Facility/Program Development Facility (ISPF/PDF) dialogs, Time Sharing Option/Extensions (TSO/E) commands, Job Control Language (JCL), selected utilities, and the UNIX System Services ISPF Shell. Hands-on lab projects may be done in teams depending on number of attendees and location.

• listing data sets

Review z/Architecture and z/OS

• describe zSeries Architecture (z/Architecture)
• provide an overview of z/OS and its components
• explain the concept of virtual storage and its exploitation in z/OS
• list the different kinds of data sets and discuss their management in z/OS
• name the main end user interfaces of z/OS

An introduction to ISPF and ISPF/PDF

• name and describe the components of ISPF
• log on to and log off from the lab system of this class
• start ISPF/PDF
• provide an overview of the structure of ISPF/PDF panels
• alter the ISPF/PDF settings
• view a data set using ISPF/PDF

Working with ISPF/PDF

• allocate a new sequential or partitioned data set
• edit an existing data set using the ISPF/PDF editor's primary and line commands
• copy or move an entire data set or selected members
• rename a data set or member
• delete an entire data set or a single member
• use ISPF/PDF to work with data set lists

Working with TSO/E

• explain the general layout of a TSO/E command
• read the commonly used notation for TSO/E commands
• describe and use a series of important TSO/E commands

Working with JCL

• name and explain the JES2 job processing phases
• describe the general layout of a job
• list and describe the components of a JCL statement
• code and submit a job
• use ISPF 3.8 and System Display and Search Facility (SDSF) to handle the job output

UNIX System Services

• describe the main features of UNIX System Services in z/OS
• briefly describe the function of the UNIX System Services shell and utilities
• explain the HFS
• list the application services provided in UNIX System Services
• explain how to start and manage a process in UNIX System Services
• describe how security is handled in UNIX System Services

This is a basic course for individuals with a theoretical background in S/390 information technology, who are new to the z/OS environment.

Prerequisites

You should complete:

• An Introduction to the z/OS Environment (ES050)
• or have equivalent on-the-job training

You should be able to:

• Understand software concepts
• Describe and use zSeries computer hardware and information system technologies
