Course Description

The course is designed to provide instruction in the design and implementation of recovery and restart procedures for DB2 which maximize availability.

Skills Gained

Backup and Recovery Review

  • List DB2 data backup and recovery utilities
  • Analyze the contents of SYSIBM.SYSCOPY and SYSIBM.SYSLGRNX
  • Understand recovery alternatives
  • Establish a point of consistency
  • Explain what causes each of the page set exceptions and how to resolve them

Logs and BSDS

  • Describe the DB2 recovery logging process
  • Understand the offloading process
  • Analyze the contents of the: BSDS, Active log data sets, Archive log data sets
  • List functions of DB2 log-related utilities

Introduction to Remote-Site Recovery

  • Identify requirements for remote-site recovery
  • Describe a very basic method for remote-site recovery

Termination/Restart

  • Explain the processing done by DB2 during startup and shutdown
  • Implement procedures to avoid the most common problems associated with DB2 startup and shutdown

Conditional Restart

  • Analyze a DSN1LOGP SUMMARY report
  • Perform a conditional restart
  • Identify potentially inconsistent page sets resulting from a conditional restart
  • Resolve any data inconsistencies resulting from a conditional restart

Broken User Data

  • Describe the format of user page sets
  • List the health check utilities for helping to resolve problems with user page sets
  • Identify problems with user page sets
  • Resolve problems with user page sets

Broken System Data

  • Describe links, hashes, and database descriptors (DBDs)
  • Diagnose broken data problems for system data
  • Implement health check procedures for system data
  • Establish procedures for resolving broken system data problems

Down-Level Detection

  • Describe what down-level page sets are
  • Explain how DB2 detects down-level page sets
  • Describe what you can do to recover from down-level data

System POC Recovery

  • Design procedures to establish system-wide POCs
  • Design procedures to recover to system-wide POCs

Offsite Recovery

  • Set the procedure in place for offsite recovery
  • Recover using the procedure established at the offsite location
