Over the past two weeks, I've been helping a client upgrade users from Passlogix Single Sign-on (SSO) 6.05 to Passlogix SSO 7.0. Not only did I upgrade them to version 7.0, I also switched their log-on method from Windows v1 to Windows v2. Windows v2 provides a better and safer way of authenticating against AD. It does away with windows machine keys, does not attach itself to the GINA (like v1) and also uses a Passphrase question that only the user knows the answer to. This really helps prevent the case of forgotten passwords and help desk calls.

Interesting read.  This is essentially a WebSSO initiative with authentication based on CAC type ID cards or OpenID.

 The CAC type of implementation (ID Cards) are not practical as they require everyone to have a card reader on their PC in order to do business with the government.  I don’t see this happening anytime too soon.

When I read the story about the bank in Bullit County, Ky, the first thing that came to my mind was multifactor authentication.  If the bank had employed a second factor of authentication, such as biometrics or smart card, they would never have lost the $415,000.00.
